London Gardeners is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in all areas of our work, from routine garden maintenance to more complex landscaping tasks.
We recognise our duties under relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice. Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our activities. We aim to continuously improve our performance through training, monitoring and regular review of this policy.
Company management has overall responsibility for ensuring that effective health and safety arrangements are in place and that they are implemented consistently across all gardening projects. This includes providing appropriate resources, equipment, supervision and information to enable work to be carried out safely.
Management will ensure that risk assessments are completed for our work activities, that safe systems of work are developed, and that suitable control measures are introduced and maintained. We will also ensure that all staff receive suitable induction and ongoing training relevant to their role and tasks.
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must follow all safe working procedures, use equipment correctly, wear any required personal protective equipment and report hazards, near misses and incidents promptly.
Employees are expected to cooperate fully with management on all health and safety matters, participate in training, and avoid improvising unsafe methods of work. No employee is expected to work in conditions that they reasonably believe present a serious and imminent danger.
Before starting new types of work or projects, we will assess the risks associated with our gardening and landscaping activities. This includes tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree work, planting, applications of soil improvers or treatments, use of machinery, and handling of materials.
Findings from risk assessments will be used to implement safe systems of work, such as ensuring adequate separation distances from pedestrians, using correct lifting techniques for heavy loads, scheduling work to minimise exposure to noise and vibration, and establishing clear traffic routes when working near driveways or access roads.
We recognise that powered machinery and hand tools used in gardening can present significant risk if not correctly maintained and operated. All machinery and tools will be selected, maintained and inspected in line with manufacturer guidance and relevant safety standards.
Only trained and authorised staff may operate powered equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws or compactors. Where necessary, additional specialist training and certificates will be obtained. Guards, safety features and emergency stop devices will not be removed or bypassed, and any defects must be reported immediately so that equipment can be taken out of use until repaired.
London Gardeners will provide suitable personal protective equipment where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and hearing protection, high visibility clothing, helmets, respiratory protection and weather-appropriate clothing.
Employees must use personal protective equipment as instructed and keep it in good condition. Any loss, damage or defect must be reported so that replacements can be arranged promptly.
Where we use fertilisers, treatments, fuels or other substances that may be hazardous, we will carry out assessments to identify the risks and necessary controls. Storage will be secure, upright and clearly labelled, and handling will follow product safety data guidance.
Only trained and authorised staff may handle or apply such substances. Measures will be in place to prevent spills, protect watercourses and drainage, and protect people, pets and wildlife from contact or exposure.
Work at height, including use of ladders or access equipment for pruning, maintenance or installation tasks, will be planned and carried out using appropriate methods. Only competent persons are permitted to work at height, and equipment will be inspected regularly.
Tree work and any tasks involving chainsaws, climbing or rigging will be undertaken only by suitably trained staff operating under safe systems of work. Exclusion zones will be established where falling branches or debris may present a risk to others.
Many gardening tasks take place in residential streets, shared gardens and other areas where the public may be present. We will take all reasonable steps to segregate our work area, control vehicle movements and protect pedestrians and other road users.
Warning signs, barriers and cones will be used where appropriate. Reversing of vehicles will be minimised, and spotters used where necessary. Tools and materials will be kept tidy to avoid trip hazards, and pathways will be cleared of debris at the end of each visit.
All accidents, near misses and hazardous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible so that they can be investigated and lessons learned. We maintain records of incidents to help us identify patterns and areas for improvement.
Employees will be briefed on emergency arrangements, including first aid provisions, fire precautions and the procedure for summoning emergency services when required. Adequate first aid supplies will be carried or accessible for the type and location of work being undertaken.
London Gardeners is committed to providing ongoing training so that staff are competent to carry out their tasks safely. This includes induction training, role-specific instruction, toolbox talks and refresher training where needed.
We encourage open communication and consultation on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in the development of safe working methods.
We will regularly monitor our health and safety performance through site inspections, equipment checks, training reviews and analysis of incident reports. This policy will be reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes in our operations or relevant legislation.
Our aim is to maintain a positive health and safety culture where safe working is integral to the way we deliver gardening services. By following this policy, London Gardeners seeks to protect people, property and the environment while delivering high quality work for our clients.
